Mad Bike in steel with led light

These stylized 'bicycles' in stainless steel capture the eyes of everyone that's walking by Barcode in Oslo.

With LED lights as an essential factor - we knew that they would give an unique experience and elevate the concept in this singular urban space.

The Mad Bike is designed by Mad Arkitekter and produced by Richard Tangen, Tangen Maskin.

Consultants for lightning is ÅF Lightning.

The Mad Bike was originally developed for the Mad Building in Bjørvika, Oslo, which is possibly one of the world’s slenderest apartment blocks. The main floors are measuring 7,8 x 90 meters, and at its leanest point, width is only 6 meters. Mad arkitekter were also designing the urban spaces flanking the building – where the idea of the Mad Bike came to life.

The challenge was extreme: What to do with an urban space which is 10 x 90 meters in area, with minimal sunlight and a requirement of 200 bicycle parking places? This strip of city floor should give pedestrians (and cyclists!) A pleasant experience and, at the same time, provide a suitable entrance to the commercial areas on ground floor level.

Feedback from the public has been a resounding approval. The bicycles are stable and solid, and have a nice finish. A lot of people have thought it was an art project and some were unsure if they were really allowed to lock their bikes to the art – but that’s what they’re for!

Our aim is to create unique projects that evolve from the dynamic and creative group which is Mad: Our practice is the sum of the contributions from each employee, and the key is to encourage each architect to release their full potential as a professional and creative individual.

With portfolio that includes residential, cultural and office buildings, as well as urban planning, we remain curious and eager to expand in new directions.

At Mad, we have a clear policy to be ahead of the development and always seek to acquire the information necessary to suggest the most beneficial and up to date solutions to various environmental Challenges.
