THE MAD BIKE PELOTON
The Mad Bike was originally developed for the Mad Building in Bjørvika, Oslo, which is possibly one of the world’s slenderest apartment blocks. The main floors are measuring 7,8 x 90 meters, and at its leanest point, width is only 6 meters. Mad arkitekter were also designing the urban spaces flanking the building – where the idea of the Mad Bike came to life.
The challenge was extreme: What to do with an urban space which is 10 x 90 meters in area, with minimal sunlight and a requirement of 200 bicycle parking places? This strip of city floor should give pedestrians (and cyclists!) A pleasant experience and, at the same time, provide a suitable entrance to the commercial areas on ground floor level.
Feedback from the public has been a resounding approval. The bicycles are stable and solid, and have a nice finish. A lot of people have thought it was an art project and some were unsure if they were really allowed to lock their bikes to the art – but that’s what they’re for!
